Thanks to everyone who made our 3rd annual Earth Day another great success! The people who came seemed to love the plants, bags, and information. Special thanks goes out to UTD Housing Operations for the bags and to UTD professors Richard Mitterer and Brian Tinsley for teaching us more about climate change.
Texas Trash-Off
This year, SEA will be participating in the Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off,
a statewide annual cleanup event sponsored by Keep Texas Beautiful and
the Texas Department of Transportation. Trash-Off is also the signature
litter prevention event of the Great American Cleanup, sponsored by
Keep America Beautiful and takes place throughout the United States
March through May. For more information on the Trash-Off, visit www.ktb.org/programs/trashoff/
Our
members decided it would be best to clean up one of the parks or public
areas near campus. If enough people show up, we would also like to send
a group to help plant and prune trees with the Texas Trees Foundation. For more information, visit www.texastreesfoundation.org
We will gather in the Comet Cafe on Saturday April 5th at 9:30am
to carpool and to make sure that everyone has a ride. Between 9:45 and 10, we
will disperse to the nearby park and tree farm. Around noon, we will
head back to campus and gather at the community garden near the
soccer fields for lunch. SEA is prepared to provide lunch for
up to 30-40 people. Anyone is welcome to help out for any amount of
time, no matter how long you stay, but be sure to wear proper clothes
and bring a pair of gardening gloves if you can.
RecycleMania!
This is a competition between over 400
colleges and universities across the United States. It is co-sponsored
by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the College and
University Recycling Coalition (CURC). For 10 weeks from January 28th
to April 7th, UTD will be trying to collect more bottles, cans,
cardboard, and paper to win this earth-friendly contest. Drop off your
materials in the red bins in the Student Union, Activities Center, or wherever you see a bin! We need everyone's help to make this a success. For more info, visit http://www.recyclemania.org
SEA knows that conservation is something that everyone can do, rRecycleMania! Official Websiteegardless of their age. To that end, we're starting a new program this year that reaches out to students in our own community. Beginning in October 2007, SEA is working with the Richardson Independent School District's AVID program to teach students about how their actions affect the environment. Using dynamic teaching methods such as dramatic and comedic performances, visual arts, and interactive games, SEA plans to help create a new generation of environmentalists, responsible citizens who can take care of the earth we all cherish.
Texas Recycles Day
Each year on November 15th, SEA celebrates Texas Recycles Day (which is also America Recycles Day) with a fair in the Student Union. The focus of the event is, naturally, on recycling. We remind people to recycle in any way we can.
